Smoky quartz is a usually brownish gray, transparent quartz variety. It got its name due to its fuming smoky color which results from free silicon ions formed by natural irradiation. It is usually mined in Brazil, the USA, and Switzerland. The very dark smoky quartz variety is called morion.
