Hematite is a mineral, consisting of iron oxides. Its name is of Greek origin, and is due to the colour of the powder found during processing, which is red like the colour of blood. Hematite is an opaque mineral, has a metallic luster, and is lead-silver to black in color. Its hardness is 6.5 and its specific gravity is 5.05. It has been used in jewellery making since 3000 BC.
