Vesuvianite or vesuvian or vesuvianite is a chorosilicate mineral. It owes its name to the area of Vesuvius where it was first found. It is formed in cracks during contact metamorphism or local metamorphism of limestone. It is also found in garnet gabbroic rocks, in basal and ultrabasic rocks and in serpentinites. It is not common in alkaline igneous rocks. It is associated with punchblende, diopside, wollastonite, epidote, scapolite, spinel and calcite. It is found in many parts of the world. Occurrences of it with large crystals are found in Campania (Monte Somma and Vesuvius), in Lazio (Ariccia region), in the Val di Fassa of Trentino in the Alto Adige and Piedmont in Italy, in Switzerland (Valais), Germany, Norway, the Ural Mountains and Yakutia in Russia, Mexico and Canada (Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec). In Greece, it is found in Elatia in the prefecture of Drama and Maroneia in the prefecture of Rodopi.
