Garnet is a silica mineral of deep red color. It derives its name from the Latin word “grantum” which means “pomegranate”. In Persia it was considered to be a royal gemstone. It symbolizes the transformation of passion into strength. It enhances sexuality, protects against phobias and insecurities and drives away negativity. Most members of the garnet group are indeed found in red hues, but garnet stones can also be found in other colors, such as Uvarovite which consistently comes in an emerald-green color.
Garnet is divided into two main categories: silicate garnets and calcium-aluminum garnets.
Pyralspite garnets include Pyrope, Almandine, and Spessartine.
Ugrandite garnets include Uvarovite, Grossular, and Andradite.
Garnets are found near streams, in igneous and metamorphic rocks in America, India, Japan, and Madagascar.
