Gagat or Black Amber or jet is a type of lignite and is considered a gemstone. Gagate is not considered as a common mineral, but rather a rock of organic origin, derived from the carbonization of wood with bitumen under high pressure.
Named after the ancient city of Gagai, it is black or brown-black in colour and has a velvet-like shine.
It usually comes from Utah, North America and some regions of Russia.
